"Facts and Biography"

Scientific name: Epinephelus itajara.

Size: The largest of the groupers ranges from 4 to 6 feet, and a maximum of 8 feet. Maximum weight, 1,000 pounds. Habitat: Reefs, natural ledges, wrecks, artificial reefs; likes to hide in any available space.

Life span: Oldest known goliath grouper was 44 years old, but scientists think they can live 50 to 60 years.

Range: Western Atlantic Ocean from Florida to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. Also found in the eastern Atlantic from Senegal to the Congo. Can be found in the eastern Pacific Ocean from the Gulf of California to Peru.

Diet: Will eat whatever fish it can get, including speared or hooked fish, but main diet is crab, lobster, other crustaceans and slow, bottom-dwelling fish.

Name issues: The goliath grouper was once known as the jewfish, but the Committee of Names of Fishes of the American Fisheries Society changed the name in 2001 after receiving a petition that claimed “jewfish” was offensive to Jews.

Jewfish are incredibly strong and are always looking for an easy meal. Whether it is an injured fish or a hooked fish the Jewfish really doesn't mind as long as it is an easy meal. They are built more like freight trains rather than Lamborghini's and they can pull you and your boat all over the ocean.
